The focus of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is not riding or
horsemanship. In fact, 90% of EAP takes place on the ground. The
focus of EAP involves setting up activities involving the horses which
will require the participants to apply certain skills. Non-verbal
communication, assertiveness, creative thinking, problem solving,
conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and confidence are examples
of the tools utilized and developed by EAP. The participants come to
understand themselves better in many areas, including their attitudes,
their relationships, and responsibility.
Why are horses used and not other animals? Horses are large and powerful,
which creates a natural opportunity for some to overcome fear and develop
confidence. The size and power of the horse are naturally intimidating to many
people. Accomplishing a task involving the horse, in spite of those fears,
creates confidence and provides for wonderful metaphors when dealing with
other intimidating and challenging situations in life.
