The Eastern North Carolina Therapeutic Riding Center is the first of its kind in
Eastern North Carolina. We take what the North American Riding for the
Handicapped Association is doing a step further, to provide a resource for
children with mental, emotional, socioeconomic, and physical disadvantages.
Our programs combine Equine Facilitated Learning with Equine Assisted
Therapy to support a broad spectrum of clients in overcoming psychological,
emotional, social, and physical challenges. We welcome all children!
At ENCTRC we provide:
physical and therapeutic programs for children of all ages
after school programs for children 8-18
day camps
riding lessons
education in the care and maintenance of companion animals
mentoring
and a lot of TLC
Currently our programs are geared toward "at risk" youth, with a concentration
on children who are victims of abuse. Our participants are given the opportunity
to experience and enjoy all facets of life on the farm while learning valuable life
lessons. Without your donation, these special services might not be possible.
A message from our founder:
"It truly is amazing to see the eyes of a child light up, to observe tensions easing,
muscles relaxing, and to witness a child come to life through interaction with
animals who love unconditionally. The transformation in children who are victims
of abuse, who are withdrawn and trapped in pain, can be phenominal. Also, the
physical and psychological limitations of children of abuse, and those afflicted
with physical disabilities, can be dramatically improved or eliminated through
EFL (Equine Facilitated Learning). There are countless children who could be
served through our innovative programs. The experience a child takes from
ENCTRC lasts a lifetime." J H Turner, Founder
Terra Schaad of Arizona State University’s Alternative Intervention Research
Clinic (ASU-AIRC) says, "During eight weeks of equine therapy, the children
learn to interact with the horses. They learn lessons in safety and grooming.
Beyond the equestrian skills, they learn to control the horse, the situation and,
ultimately, themselves."
